2010 stadium contractors named, building to begin soon.(News)

THE R2.85-billion contract to build the 2010 World Cup stadium has been awarded to Murray and Robert-WBHO.

The announcement yesterday marked the end of weeks of negotiations between the City of Cape Town and the consortium, which had been named as the preferred bidder, to reduce the bill from the tendered price of R3.7bn.

Work preparing the site for the stadium, to be used for a semi-final game during the 2010 World Cup, may begin this week.

The contract was to have been signed on Monday, but awarding it was delayed while the city made arrangements to cover a shortfall of R18m in the budget.
